    Agentic advertising

Agentic advertising is the planning, buying, selling and measurement of advertising by software agents that act on a human's brief, negotiate with other agents through a published protocol, and execute transactions on existing advertising infrastructure under human-set guardrails.

Two protocol families define the field as of October 2026. IAB Tech Lab's AAMP (Agentic Advertising Management Protocols), named on 26 February 2026, wraps existing standards (OpenRTB, OpenDirect, AdCOM, the Deals API) in MCP, A2A and gRPC, adds the Agentic RTB Framework for in-auction enrichment, and runs an Agent Registry that listed 49 agents on 17 October 2026 (PPC Land, 1 March 2026; IAB Tech Lab Agent Registry). AdCP (Ad Context Protocol), launched 15 October 2025 by PubMatic, Scope3, Swivel, Triton Digital, Optable and Yahoo and governed by AgenticAdvertising.org, defines agent tasks for media buy, signals, creative, brand and governance over MCP and A2A (PPC Land, 16 October 2025). Both are compared, with a dated timeline, in AAMP vs AdCP.

The word "agentic" distinguishes this from the automation programmatic already has. A bidder that optimizes bids is automated; an agent that reads a brief, discovers sellers, negotiates a package and places a guaranteed order is agentic. The distinction is also where the money is not yet: Adform's CTO said in September 2026 that very little spend runs through either protocol (PPC Land, 24 September 2026), and Apostra, the company most committed to AdCP, reported roughly $1.2 million in agentic buys (PPC Land, 27 September 2026).

Example: a buyer agent receives "reach pet owners in Germany in Q1 with EUR 200,000," queries a seller agent's adagents.json, receives proposals with forecasts, negotiates a price within guardrails, and books a programmatic guaranteed deal that a human approves; the deal ID then flows through ordinary OpenRTB.
